NC Surf Adventures is a locally owned and operated, family-run adventure company based in Wilmington, North Carolina, proudly serving Wrightsville Beach, Figure Eight Island, and Topsail Island. Since 2019, the Fallon family has been dedicated to helping individuals and families connect with the ocean through professional, safe, and unforgettable experiences.
We believe that getting outside and enjoying the water is one of the best ways to live life. Over the years, we’ve taught thousands of children and adults how to surf and explore the Carolina coast, all while promoting confidence, ocean safety, and a deeper appreciation for our natural surroundings.
NC Surf Adventures specializes in private surf lessons, children’s surf camps, kayak tours, and stand-up paddleboard (SUP) experiences. Whether you’re a first-time surfer or looking to improve your skills, our programs are designed for all ages and ability levels. Our instructors are among the most highly trained and professionally certified surf instructors in North Carolina, with a strong focus on safety, progression, and creating a fun, supportive environment.
Founder/Programs Director
James Fallon
Jimmy has had a lifelong passion for surfing, developing a deep connection to the ocean from a young age. He grew up in a small surf community on the island of Bermuda before moving to North Carolina in 2012 to attend the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), where he earned a degree in Economics with a minor in Environmental Science—while spending as much time in the water as possible.
In 2019, Jimmy founded NC Surf Adventures, a Wilmington-based surf school dedicated to bringing people together through outdoor experiences. With over 20 years of surfing experience and more than 12 years of teaching surf lessons, Jimmy has coached students of all ages and skill levels. He is a former ocean rescue lifeguard with the Bermuda Lifeguard Service and a certified Rescue Scuba Diver, bringing a strong foundation of water safety and ocean knowledge to every lesson.
He has surfed in more than 12 countries and across 11 U.S. states and has a passion for photography along the journeys. In addition to his work with NC Surf Adventures, Jimmy is a Level 2 PSIA Ski Instructor and Level 1 AASI Snowboard Instructor at Breckenridge Resort in Colorado, where he has taught for over 10 years.
The Staff
Keaton Kirkland
Keaton Kirkland was raised in Virginia Beach, where he first developed his passion for surfing while attending and later working at a local surf camp. He is currently completing his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, studying Oceanography and Geospatial Science. A former member of the UNCW Surf Team, Keaton brings over six years of surf instruction experience to NC Surf Adventures. He is known for his extensive knowledge of the ocean and positive teaching style. In addition to instructing, he serves as the school’s in-house meteorologist and can let you know what the atmosphere is doing.
Ryan McKechnie
Ryan McKechnie was born and raised in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he built a strong surfing foundation in cold-water conditions. With over 20 years of surfing experience and more than 12 years of teaching, Ryan is one of the most seasoned instructors at NC Surf Adventures. He serves as a Lead Surf Trainer and is also a highly skilled kayak guide. In the off-season, Ryan works as a professional snowboard instructor at Breckenridge and Keystone Resorts, holding an AASI Level 2 certification. Outside of instruction, he is a talented artist specializing in ocean-inspired ceramics, reflecting his deep connection to the water.
Brett Mickiewicz
Brett Mickiewicz is entering his second year as a surf instructor with NC Surf Adventures and has been surfing for over five years. He is known for his patience, adaptability, and ability to connect with both children and adults in a teaching environment. Brett brings a unique surfing style, comfortably riding frontside on both left- and right-breaking waves. In addition to surf instruction, he is also one of the team’s newest kayak and paddle guides. Outside of work, Brett enjoys Wilmington’s live music scene and spends time welding and working on creative metal projects.
Trigg Morris
Trigg Morris is a Wilmington native, currently studying Exercise Science at UNCW. She has a strong passion for surfing and is often one of the first in the water. She enjoys helping students build confidence while keeping lessons fun and engaging. Outside of surfing, Trigg loves cooking, spending time on the water and her cat.
Noah Blanton
Noah Blanton is a science teacher, surfer, and musician from southeastern North Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina Wilmington with a degree in Marine Biology and currently teaches Earth and Environmental Science and Honors Marine Science at North Brunswick High School. Noah has extensive experience in surf instruction and coastal education, helping students feel comfortable and confident in the ocean. He is passionate about marine life and enjoys sharing his knowledge in an engaging and approachable way. Outside of teaching, Noah plays music locally and brings a creative, well-rounded energy to every lesson. Noah has been teaching for over 6 seasons and is one of our favorite instructors and kayak guide!
Davis Beatty
Davis Beatty is a dedicated surf instructor with a strong passion for ocean-based activities and helping others learn. With experience in both surf instruction and group work with people of all ages, Davis brings a calm, encouraging presence to every lesson. He focuses on building confidence, proper technique, and ocean awareness in a safe and supportive environment. Davis enjoys spending time in the water, whether surfing or exploring the coast. His enthusiasm for teaching and love for the ocean make him a valuable part of the NC Surf Adventures team.
Hayes Barden
Hayes is the newest to the NC Surf Adventures team who brings a positive attitude and strong work ethic. He has been a lifelong student of NC Surf Adventures and this is his first year as being a Junior Instructor. With a passion for surfing and the coastal lifestyle, Hayes enjoys helping students feel comfortable in the water as they learn the fundamentals of surfing. (Even when he was a camper!)
Miles Devoid
Miles Devoid is returning for his second season with NC Surf Adventures and brings a strong passion for the outdoors to the team. A local of Wilmington, Miles has spent years enjoying activities such as surfing, skating, sailing, and soccer. He is currently a student at Cape Fear Community College and plans to transfer to NC State University to study agriculture. Miles is known for his positive attitude and enthusiasm in the water, creating a fun and supportive environment for students. He is excited to continue sharing his love for surfing and working alongside the NC Surf Adventures team.
